The Ox Road ( 170 km/ 106 miles)
Hämeen Härkätie
The Ox Road of Häme was the single most important road in the early history of Finland. This route has been used by merchants, soldiers, peasants, and kings for more than a thousand years.
The Ox Road starts in Turku and ends in Hämeenlinna, connecting the mediaeval castles of the two cities. It is an old administrative route but also an ancient European pilgrimage road from the Turku cathedral to Hattula's Church of the Holy Cross. Also, a number of other mediaeval churches can be found along the way. The road runs through what is almost the original scenery, leading through parish villages, river valleys, and great expanses of fields typical of south-west Finland into the woodlands of Häme. Many historical sights, attractions, and beautiful nature sites such as the Torronsuo and Liesjärvi nature parks lie along the Ox Road.
