Take a Journey into the Future in the Finnish Science Centre Heureka

A new interactive exhibition 20X0 – A Journey into the Future was opened at Heureka, the Finnish Science Centre on October 2011. The time train will take visitors on a journey into a city in the year 20X0. The exhibition is a city simulator through which visitors will learn about future housing, transport, consumption and health care.

The journey to the 20X0 city will also include a visit to a restaurant.

The journey to the 20X0 city will also include a visit to a restaurant.

The exhibition has 20 different exhibits.

While proceeding through the exhibition, visitors, equipped with an identification wristband, will make choices that have an impact on the future. Based on these choices, the simulator will profile for each visitor a personal sustainability barometer, which can be compared to the overall impact of choices made by previous visitors.

The exhibition's key theme is lifestyles and their sustainability. Sustainability is measured from three different perspectives: the environment, society and the economy. People constantly make choices in their lives that will shape the future. In a similar manner, the exhibition visitors will shape their own future through the choices they make at each exhibit and based on the feedback they receive.

The exhibition has 20 different exhibits. The biggest attraction is the space elevator, which is the top visitor destination of the 20X0 city. The elevator transports passengers into orbit around the Earth while giving a wealth of information on what space will be needed and used for in the future. The journey to the 20X0 city will also include a visit to a restaurant, a museum and a shop. A self-service health clinic will give a glimpse into what health care will be like in the future.

20X0 – A Journey into the Future is part of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 programme. The year will offer experi-ences and encounters with design, both in Finland and internationally. The goal is to introduce different ways in which design can be applied to improve our living environment and to create opportunities for new business and innovation. This will help us make our city a better place in which to live – now and in the future.
